2nd District Rep. Andrew Barkis appointed to Local Government and Business and Financial Services committees

Rep. Andrew Barkis has been appointed to the House Local Government and House Business and Financial Services committees by House Speaker Frank Chopp.

“I am honored to serve the citizens of the 2nd District and look forward to bringing my personal knowledge and experience as a local business owner to these communities,” said Barkis, R-Olympia. “We need to have a limited, but effective government that is focused on being fiscally responsible, creating more jobs, and fostering small business growth within our district and state.”

The House Local Government Committee considers issues relating to the operations and financing of counties, cities, and some special districts. The committee also considers issues relating to the Growth Management Act and land use issues such as local permitting and the subdivision of property.

“I look forward to working with Rep. Barkis on the Local Government Committee,” said committee ranking member Rep. David Taylor, R-Moxee. “His involvement in his local community and his success as a small businessman dealing with local rules and regulations will benefit our committee discussions and serve the citizens of Washington state well.”

The House Business and Financial Services Committee considers the licensing and regulation of businesses and professions (except for health care and law-related professions). The committee also considers issues relating to insurance, including the activities of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner and the Pollution Liability Insurance Agency, the solvency of insurance companies, and the rates and practices of insurance companies. Financial-services issues include the safety and soundness of state banks and credit unions, the regulation of consumer credit and lending, and the regulation of securities and investments. The committee also considers consumer protection issues relating to motor vehicles, financial services, and insurance.

“I am excited to work on the Business and Financial Services Committee with Rep. Barkis,” said committee ranking member Rep. Brandon Vick, R-Felida. “His well-known experience as a small business owner will not only add value to his committee, but will also be an asset to our discussions and overall decisions that are made on this committee.”
