Rep. Andrew Barkis sponsors Lakewood teen as page in state House of Representatives

Fourteen-year-old Aiden C. Jackson, a student from St. Francis Cabrini School, recently spent one week in Olympia serving as a page in the state House of Representatives. He was sponsored by 2nd District Rep. Andrew Barkis.

“It was an honor to sponsor Aiden,” said Barkis, R-Olympia. “He is a smart and driven young man with an amazing future ahead of him. I hope he enjoyed his time at the Legislature. ”

Aiden's page duties included learning to navigate the many buildings around the Capitol, delivering messages and documents to legislators and staff, and assisting on the House floor. A few hours a day, he attended page school to learn and understand the operations and actions of the Legislature. By week's end, he had the opportunity to write a bill for a mock committee hearing in front of his fellow pages.

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spent a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government and assisting legislators on the House floor. Pages earn $35 a day while serving in the program.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For more information about the House page program, click here.
