Rep. Andrew Barkis participates in 2018 Western State Leadership Academy

Rep. Andrew Barkis, R-Olympia, was selected to participate in The Council of State Governments 2018 Western Legislative Academy Nov. 27 – Dec. 2, in Colorado Springs, CO. The Western Legislative Academy (WLA) is a very competitive leadership training with just 36 participants completing the 2018 academy class.

Barkis said he was honored to attend the academy. It was a great opportunity to learn and meet fellow legislators from across the country.

“One of the key factors of being a strong and successful leader is the ability to gain knowledge from other state lawmakers. We all have experiences we can bring to the table and share best practices with one another,” said Barkis. “Through this invaluable training, I learned new leadership skills that will elevate my work heading into, and during, the 2019 legislative session. Acquiring these additional skills and training makes me a more effective leader for my constituents in the 2nd District, and to the people of Washington state.”

WLA is an annual training program offered to western state legislators in their first four years of cumulative service. Participants are selected on the basis of their dedication to public service, desire to improve personal legislative effectiveness, and commitment to the legislative institutions they serve.

Barkis will begin his second term in the state House of Representatives when the Legislature convenes on Jan. 14.
