Statement from Rep. Andrew Barkis on NTSB’s report on the 2017 Amtrak Passenger Train 501 derailment in DuPont

Rep. Andrew Barkis, R-Olympia, ranking Republican on the House Transportation Committee, released the following statement in response to the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) report on the 2017 Amtrak Passenger Train 501 Derailment in DuPont, Washington.

“The Amtrak derailment in DuPont resulted in the loss of three lives and several injuries. We owe it to the victims of this tragedy to not only identify the failures that led to it, but the solutions that will prevent a situation like this from ever happening again.

“As a state lawmaker, my greatest concern with the NTSB findings is Sound Transit and the Washington State Department of Transportation could have prevented this tragedy. These government agencies must be transparent about their decisions, be held responsible for them, and commit to reforms.

“The bottom line is our state must protect its travelers – whether it be trains, ferries, planes or highways.  Over the next few months, I – along with members of the House Transportation Committee – will be reviewing the recommendations and working with the principal agencies involved so they can provide a plan to implement prior to service restarting on the line.”
