Rep. Andrew Barkis: “This amendment sends a signal to our neighboring states that we do not intend to start a trade war.” | Speech on his amendment to House Bill 2119 in the House Transportation Committee

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, the House Transportation Committee held an executive session on House Bill 2119, one of the policies within the Democrats' Move Ahead Washington transportation plan. Rep. Andrew Barkis, R-Olympia, offered an amendment to solve two problems: 1) to provide a long-term, stable, and sustainable revenue source through the use of the state's sales tax on new vehicles rather than the use of the export fuel tax; and 2) to send a signal to our neighboring states of Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska that we do not intend to start a trade war or inflict taxation without representation on the citizens of these states.
